1995 Indonesia

A journey through time

One of the destinations in Indonesia that has always intrigued me tremendously is Irian Jaya. Due to historical events Irian Jaya is now part of Indonesia but both geographically and ethnically it is much more related to Papua New Guinea.

Irian Jaya is the most remote part of Indonesia and lies in the east, only separated from Papua Guinea by a man made straight vertical line. To travel from my home to the Baliem valley, my final destination, took me no less then 49 hours and no less then 5 stops! Amsterdam – Kuala Lumpur – Jakarta – Ujung Padang – Biak – Jayapura – Wamena.
